July 4th Celebrations

Next to Thanksgiving and Christmas, July 4th must be one of the most celebrated holidays in the Sodus Bay area. There will be no shortage of activities this holiday and throughout the extended weekend. For as long as I can remember the celebrations have begun on July 3rd with the Kiddie Parade and fireworks on the bay.  This year it will be no different. However, this patriotic holiday tends to have a deeper and more meaningful connotation to me as both of our sons are Marines and have fought for our freedoms both in Iraq and Afghanistan. So now, when I think about Independance Day, July 4th, not just because it's my youngest son's 31st birthday this year, I think about the sacrifices both he and his brother have made and continue to make to maintain our freedoms.

Please check-out the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum July 4th Extravaganza of events and share them with

Just because school is back in session, summer is not over! There's still lots of GREAT weather left here in the Sodus - Sodus Point, New York area.  And there's still lots of GREAT things to do!  Like.............

.......Taking a cruise around Sodus Bay and to
Captain Bruce King and First Mate and wife- Mary
Chimney Bluffs with Captain Bruce King and his wife and First Mate Mary on their beautiful cabin cruiser the "Mary Adaline".

My husband and I recently did this for my birthday this past Wednesday.  We took a 2 & 1/2 hour evening sunset cruise around Sodus Bay.  Captain Bruce is well versed on the history of the bay and the islands within. We first headed out towards the channel to see if it was safe enough to go out into Lake Ontario to head over to Chimney Bluffs. We could see a storm off in the distance and the waves were kicking up, so the weather did not permit us to leave the bay on this evening.

Pier light at Sodus Bay entrance
We then headed over to Crescent Beach, a long, thin strip of beach with several cottages on it. The only way to get to these cottages is by boat. We cruised around LeRoy Island, which is the only island accessible by car. The Captain thought he spotted a Bald Eagle.  There's always a plethora of wildlife to enjoy.  We cruised around Newark Island and Eagle Island. These are only accessible by boat as well, and then down to the bottom of the bay and back to the dock.
Crescent Beach - Sodus Bay

Sodus Bay is the largest safe harbor embayment on the south Shore of Lake Ontario and rich in history. Winter Spring, Summer of Fall, there's always something to do here.

It was a very relaxing evening cruise on Sodus Bay. We thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait to do a Fall Foliage Cruise with Captain Bruce and Mary.

Chimney Bluffs - from Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum
The captain provides soft drinks, water and snacks, but you can bring your own. We brought some wine and local cheese and crackers, shrimp cocktail, and chocolate covered strawberries my son sent me for my birthday and shared with our Captain and First Mate.

Captain B's Custom Cruises are still operating through mid October - weather permitting - Weekday evenings  6 PM to 8:30 PM and weekends starting at 10 AM.

To Book your Sunset Cruise on Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario  contact Captain Bruce King at : sales@captainbscc.com

What's for Breakfast at Maxwell Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast?

At Maxwell Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast we
start
with the freshest local ingredients we can find.  Fresh apples are just coming off the trees in the Sodus, New York area and the farmers will soon be offering U Pick. When you come to Sodus you will find orchards upon orchards of numerous varieties of apples.  Your favorite variety will be available at one of the many farm markets nearby.  Each year in October the farm markets offer an Apple Tasting Tour; giving the visitor an opportunity to taste a variety of apples before purchase.
Did you know that where we live in Wayne County
Local Apples
New York,  is the second largest apple producing region in all of the United States next to Washington State?  Wayne County, NY is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario, halfway between Rochester and Oswego, NY.  Situated by a Great Lake is very conducive to fruit growing.  Aside from apples, the farmers grow blueberries, cherries, pears, plums, peaches, grapes, apricots , flowers and more.
Apple Omelet, breakfast sausage, homemade bread
With all this fresh fruit I can hardly resist not making an Apple Omelet with local smoked Swiss cheese from the Heluva Good Cheese Store in Sodus as well.  I also use local farm fresh eggs (when available) from one of my favorite go to farm markets - Burnaps                                                           This morning I served fresh local pears, an apple omelet with breakfast sausage and homemade toasted vegetable bread. To make an Apple Omelet saute your favorite variety of local apples juliand in a pan with melted butter. Saute until tender, but not mushy. Set aside. (I like to use two varieties when offering this)
Beat two large farm fresh eggs with some 1/2 and 1/2 cream.   Melt butter in an 8" fry pan on medium low.  Pour egg mixture into pan. When egg is almost set but still a little soupy put sauteed apples on half of the egg and shredded Heluva Good Cheese smoked Swiss cheese on top of the apples. (Your choice of cheese is optional. You can use smoked cheddar, or regular cheddar. Make it your own!)  Fold egg over apples and cheese. Cover and turn heat down to low. Cook until cheese is melted - about a minute or so. Garnish with more sauteed apples and cheese. Serve with breakfast sausage or bacon and toast. I serve homemade sunflower wheat or vegetable bread toasted. Home made jam, juice , coffee and fresh fruit.  Enjoy!

The Apple Tasting Tour starts October 1, 2013. The Tour Challenge is the whole month of October and the Tasting Weekend is October 11-14.

Our guest sent this photo of our cottage where he and his friends stayed.  The cottage is actually the original carriage house built in 1846. It's built out of cobblestones from Lake Ontario.

Thank you for sharing your photos! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay! Looking forward to seeing you again. We love hearing from you.

Another one of my favorate stops is Pop's House of Country Collectables.

POP'S House of Country Collectibles

This use to be Ruth's dad's house. Ruth and her mom turned it into a wonderful gift shop full of old and new. I bought a pair of end tables for one of our guest rooms from Pop's House. And Ruth had cained some antique chairs for me.

Homemade wreaths, collectables, from furnature to Christmas orniments. While you are there get a cup of homemade soup and bread that Ruth made. Or order your homemade Christmas cookies. Definitely worth stopping.

Katie Acreas Alpaca Products and Gift Shop

Nothing like soft Alpaca fiber hats, mittens, scarves!

I recently got to visit these really cute critters. They are just
as curious as we are. Beautiful animals.
Katie Acres Alpaca Fiber & Gifts
The new gift shop has many unique items like  homemade lavender soap wrapped in alpaca fiber. Which makes for a natural scrubby. As the soap shinks the fiber continues to hug the bar of soap.
Warm socks,  hats, mittens, gloves, scarfes and more.
Katie Acres is located at 4864 Arcadia Zurich Norris Rd., Sodus, NY. Open Thuirsday - Saturday 10 am - 6 pm.
100% made in America.  Be sure to ask to visit these furry 4 legged friends while at the gift shop.

Lukas Pottery - Chesser Cat Bank
Lukas Pottery - tableware

Lukas Pottery is another one of my all time favorites. The pottery is thrown and kilned right there on the premises. This Chesser Cat Bank is one of my favorite items. Each of our grand children got one when they were born. A unique gift for any age.  You can find tableware, bakeware, bathroom accessories, vases, lawn ordiments, lamps, lamp shades, wine coolers and more. Each piece is unique and so beautiful.  Best of all - the tableware and bakeware are oven, stovetop, microwave and dishwasher safe.

Lukas Pottery is located at 7060 Route 14, Sodus Point, NY. Open  10 am - 6 pm Tuesday -  Sunday

Ol Factory Soaps & Scents

I recently came across Ol' Factory Soaps and Scents.
You won't find just homemade lavendar soaps and scents. This wonderful little shop has jewlery, lavendar wreaths, essential oils, herbal teas, organic spices, primitive gifts and more.  It just so happens they have a lavendar farm and each summer have a lavendar festival.

I recently purchased a really neat lamp made from an old meat grinder with and old collendar for a lamp shade.  I just love it!

Ol' Factory  Soaps and Scents is located at 12973 Upton Rd., Red Creek, NY. Open on weekends.   They are having an open house December  14 & 15
